As Namibia prepares to mark 36 years of independence, celebrations are taking place across the country, including within correctional facilities.

At the Windhoek Correctional Facility, inmates and officials gathered for a pre-independence celebration centred on reflection, dignity, and nation-building.

Our reporter, Richolene Ouses, has more.

"In the lead-up to Independence Day, the Windhoek Correctional Facility became a space of reflection and expression, as inmates and officials came together to commemorate Namibia's journey to freedom."

Held under the theme 'Restoring dignity, rebuilding nations: 36 years of correcting for a safer Namibia', the event highlighted the role of correctional services in shaping not only individuals but society at large.

Proceedings began with a moment of silence, honouring the heroes and heroines who sacrificed for Namibia's independence.

"Through these activities, correctional services continue to emphasise rehabilitation, personal development, and the restoration of dignity."

Speakers also explained the symbolism of the Namibian flag, while performances portrayed the realities of the apartheid era through dance and drama.

Inmate Ricardo Katzao reflected on the sacrifices behind Namibia's independence and the responsibility to build on that legacy.

"We are reminded of the countless men and women who dared to dream, who fought with resilience, and who never wavered in their belief in a free and sovereign Namibia.

Their bravery, their spirits, and their unyielding commitment to justice have paved the way for the liberties we enjoy today. As we commemorate this pivotal moment, it is imperative that we honour the legacy of those who came before us."

Inmates Donavan Garoeb and Domingo Da Costa shared messages and are calling on fellow Namibians to value the hard-earned independence and make choices that contribute positively to society.

Assistant Commissioner Elenor Nawa says Namibian Independence Day is observed in correctional facilities through reflection and educational activities, while rehabilitation programmes equip inmates with skills for reintegration and promote accountability.

"As Namibia marks 36 years of independence, moments like these highlight that correctional facilities are not only places of confinement but spaces of reflection, growth, and renewed purpose. This is a reminder that building a nation also means rebuilding lives."
