The 15-year-old Angolan national, reportedly subjected to starvation, overwork, and abuse by a 62-year-old pensioner who employed her in Oshiyagaya Village, has fully recovered and has now been discharged from medical care.
The young girl's dire condition came to light after a video of her went viral on various social media platforms following her escape from her alleged abuser.
Following the video, the Oshikoto police acted swiftly, and within less than 24 hours, she was rescued, and her employer was apprehended.
The girl, who was promised a salary of just N$500, which she allegedly never received since taking the job mid-last year, was also forced to sleep in an open shack without a mattress.
In an exclusive interview with NBC News from her hospital bed earlier this month, she narrated that poverty and lack of employment opportunities in Angola had driven her to cross the border into Namibia. She added that, after a full recovery, she would seek similar work but vowed never to return to her former workplace.
After medical treatment that included milk formula to aid her recovery, she is now well and is expected to be moved to a safe house until the case concludes.
Many Namibians continue to employ underage Angolan nationals as cheap labourers.
The pensioner, Selma Daniel, made her first court appearance on 16 March. She opted for a state-funded lawyer after the magistrate advised her that the case was serious and that, if found guilty, she faces a fine of up to N$1 million or a maximum of 30 years' imprisonment.
She remains in custody, with her next appearance scheduled for 19 August.
