Workers in the fishing industry are calling for urgent government intervention over what they call worsening working conditions and job insecurity.

The protesting workers handed over a petition to Erongo Governor Natalia |Goagoses.

At the centre of the demonstration is the government's decision to auction fishing quotas, which they say contribute to job insecurity and reduced working hours.

They say many companies are struggling to maintain permanent staff due to declining quota allocation, forcing some to rely on buying fish through public auction to remain operational.

This, they say, has left many employees, particularly those on fixed-term contracts, without guaranteed work or income.

Employees from Gendev Fishing Company also raised concerns over prolonged periods without work and reduced pay.

Workers from Tunacor Group called for an end to the quota auction system and demanded a more stable and transparent allocation process that supports local companies and protects jobs.

They are further demanding improved working conditions, job security and the transition of long-serving contract workers into permanent employment.

The governor promised to channel the petition to the concerned parties.
