The former Otjiwarongo mayor, Gottlieb Shivute, said the late James Uerikua played a significant role in grooming, mentoring and shaping him into leadership.

Shivute said all he is left with now are photographs of a man with whom he shared both a political working relationship and a personal friendship.

“James was one of a kind, and I learned a lot from him. He always used to tell me, ‘Candy, when you reach that podium, it is you — you need to sell yourself,’ and I did not take that lightly.”

He said Uerikua was also knowen for his exceptional public speaking abilities, describing him as a leader who spoke with confidence, conviction, and a strong presence.

“In terms of public speaking, James had a strong presence and spoke with confidence and conviction. He was one of the rare breeds you can find in Namibia when it comes to public speaking. And when the moment came for him to step onto the podium – James, how could someone memorise in such a short time? – it was remarkable.”

He also remembered Uerikua as a fashion lover who appreciated elegance and paid attention to detail.

"James loved beautiful things, and he would always compliment you when you were dressed nicely. He would say, 'That’s how a person should dress.' One thing I observed is that he loved watches.”

The former mayor further said that Uerikua’s death is a great loss to the region and to the many people whose lives he touched through his leadership, mentorship and service.
