Inspector General Joseph Shikongo is concerned over the rising number of rape cases in Namibia, warning that a failure to address underlying social issues is fuelling the crisis.
Speaking at the Boys to Men Seminar 2026, Shikongo linked the surge in cases to challenges such as a lack of discipline, absent fatherhood, and limited guidance among young men.
He said police record approximately 4,000 to 7,000 rape cases each month, describing the situation as deeply concerning and unsustainable.
Shikongo stressed that these crimes cannot be addressed by law enforcement alone but require intervention at the household and community levels. He emphasised the need to instil discipline and values from a young age, warning that failing to do so would have long-term consequences for society.
He called on parents, communities, and institutions to take responsibility for guiding boys toward responsible and respectful manhood.
