Nineteen couples made history by tying the knot simultaneously at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Rundu, marking a first for the Apostolic Vicariate of Rundu.
Father Eliaser Nakakuwa described the event as a powerful testament to Christian marriage:
“It is a great impact in the lives of these 19 couples who have decided in a decisive manner, to bring their life, to bring their union and their togetherness at the altar of the Lord for the blessing. So, for us it’s really a blessing and it just boosts up the spirit of what it means to be a Christian more in the aspect of married life.”
He elaborated on the significance of marriage:
“It begins with discernment. By discernment, you choose the other partner over and over again, despite the ups and downs. Despite the weaknesses of the other, you say this is the person I have chosen for the rest of my life and on one hand, we should remember that marriage was designed by God himself.”
Father Nakakuwa also reflected on challenges facing marriage in Namibia, where many couples file for divorce:
“When you look at couples that are divorcing, you ask yourself the question; what led them to come together? Was it because of material possession, or was it because of the titles? If it wasn’t love, then it would lead to a multiplication of divorces... but if it was love, then one could always go back in his or her conscience to the essence of marriage to say, what is marriage for me.”
He urged the couples to serve as an example to others:
“When we come to church, when one brings himself to church, you must come with an intention that, what does the church do for me? Does it heal me? Does it remind me of anything? Does it want me to keep living in my irregular marriage? Or should I take a step so that I may bring my union or my relationship with a partner to the altar of God?”
