Minister of Works and Transport Veikko Nekundi recently inspected flood response measures in Zambezi, including the completed 170-metre floating bridge at Kalimbeza, which now provides safe passage for learners accessing schools at Malalakanga and Isize.

Construction of additional floating bridges is underway at Masikili (66.5 metres completed of 150 targeted), Imukusi (planned 250-metre bridge to restore access to Imukusi Primary School), Muzii Combined School (200-metre bridge), and Ikaba.

“This is a matter of priority; this is an emergency. Our purpose and responsibility is to ensure that nobody is cut off, particularly from health facilities and school infrastructure,” Nekundi said.

The minister also assessed the Bukalo-Sifuha gravel road, currently impassable due to flooding at multiple points. He called on the Roads Authority to install culverts once water levels recede to restore access.
