The residents of Kunene came together in mourning during a mass memorial service for the 11 victims who died in an accident involving the Ministry of Health patient bus between Otjiwarongo and Okahandja on the 1st of May.
Mourners flocked to the Herbert Conradie Stadium in Khorixas, where the memorial service was held.
Among those who perished in the accident are six learners from four schools in the region.
Deputy Minister of Health and Social Services (MoHSS), Suzan Ndjaleka, said the tragedy had robbed the nation of young lives and dedicated public servants.
"These precious souls left us too soon, and they have left an incredible mark on our ministry; they have left an incredible mark in the schools; they have left an incredible mark on their families. Although their voices are now silent, they have passionately served the Namibian community."
Ndjaleka reflected on the painful loss of children, describing it as one of the greatest tragedies any nation can endure.
Kunene Governor Vipuakuje Muharukua said the tragedy had shaken the region at every level.
"Indeed, this tragedy has left our region deeply wounded. It has shaken our institutions; our communities; our schools, specifically; our workplaces – for the health professionals; and our homes – for the bereaved families. Yet, even in this profound sorrow, we are reminded of strength, unity, compassion, and humanity that continue to define the people of the Kunene region."
The director of education in Kunene, Sophia Ferdrieck, remembered the learners as children full of promise whose absence will forever be felt in their schools.
"These were not just learners. They were our children full of light, each carrying dreams still unfolding, voices still growing, and lives still waiting to bloom. Their desks, oh lord, will now remain silent. We wonder how the day will be when the school will reopen in those classes... but their presence will forever echo in the hearts of those who taught them."
For the bereaved families, the pain of the tragedy remains deeply personal.
Zeroltha Nanuses is an aunt to one of the victims'.
"Elzario started his school in 2023 at Gaeb Primary School as a grade 1 learner and went until grade 4. Jeraldo Elzario was an outstanding performer as well. Those boys would most definitely always get up to 4 or 5 diplomas. They had such a beautiful future because they excelled in sports and were outstanding academically."
Leaders called on the communities to stand together during this difficult time.
