Vice-President Lucia Witbooi officially opened the 12th Oshakati Totem Expo with a call upon all towns in Namibia, especially those without expos and trade fairs in their towns – to come up with initiatives to boost the local economy.
This year's totem expo is held under the theme 'Strengthening ties through culture'.
The totem expo brought together 150 exhibitors on the local and international front, while 16 totems were represented.
Witbooi says the Oshakati Totem Expo has evolved into far more than just a cultural event, as it now stands as a symbol of identity, unity, economic participation, and social cohesion.
"In Namibia, cultural diversity is our defining national asset; it remains one of our greatest strengths. We are people of different languages, traditions, customs, and histories, yet united under one flag and one national identity. It is at events such as the Oshakati Totem Expo, where we use our diverse traditions, languages, and histories as a foundation for unity, fostering mutual respect and national progress."
She emphasised that Namibia's cultural identity should never be viewed as outdated but rather as a foundation upon which the nation can build modern, united, and inclusive communities.
The vice president was pleased to note that the Oshakati Totem Expo continues to demonstrate that culture and business can coexist successfully.
"Government recognises expos and trade fairs as vital catalysts for economic growth and grassroots development. Events such as this serve as strategic platforms to empower, especially Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), and promote cultural heritage. Moreover, we recognise the important role local authorities continue to play in driving development at the grassroots level."
Oshakati Town Council Mayor Leonard Hango says the Oshakati Totem Expo is a celebration of identity, diversity, heritage and a collective vision towards development.
"The Oshakati Totem Expo has been involved in cultural gatherings; it has become a platform for economic participation, for SME development, for cultural preservation, for youth empowerment and for investment promotion, including tourism promotion and stakeholder collaboration."
Oshana Governor Hofni Iipinge says, in a rapidly changing world, events such as the totem expo remind Namibians of the importance of preserving traditions, customs, languages and values while at the same time embracing progress and development.
"The Oshakati Totem has over the years evolved into a unique platform that celebrates the rich cultural diversity and identity of our people. It serves not only as a cultural gathering but also as an important economic and social platform."
The totem expo, which started today, ends on the 6th of June.
