The Palms for Life Cleaning Campaign in Tsumkwe will host the first edition of its community sports tournament from 31 July to 2 August 2026. The cleaning campaign was officially launched in April last year and currently has 29 participants, most of whom are unemployed youth from the settlement.
The upcoming tournament features soccer, netball, and volleyball competitions. It aims to recognize the participants for their dedication to keeping Tsumkwe clean while promoting unity and environmental health awareness among community members through sport.
Cleaning Campaign Coordinator and Organiser, Paulus Ndara, said the initiative is about appreciation and connection. He noted that in order to appreciate their commitment and the effort they are putting into this project, they had to find a way to recognise their contribution and make them feel proud of the work they have pledged to do. Ndara added that the community is united through sports activities, which is one of the main ways they bring the majority of the community together while also sharing their message about environmental health awareness.
Participants in the Palms for Life Cleaning Campaign have formed teams that will compete in the tournament. The captain of the campaign's soccer team, Blessing Mukonda, said preparations are underway, but the main goal is to bring people together. Mukonda explained that the aim is to bring people and the team together, promote discipline, and develop togetherness, adding that it is all about having fun, enjoying themselves, and showcasing their talents.
