The National Commission on Research, Science and Technology (NCRST) has launched its Technology and Innovation Support Centre Desk (TISCD) in Windhoek.
The desk aims to support researchers' innovation, individuals and entrepreneurs by providing access to specialised patent information, scientific publications and other research resources through the World Intellectual Property Organization's TISC Programme.
Speaking at the launch, NCRST chief executive officer Professor Anicia Peters highlighted the commission's role in strengthening the country's research, science, technology and innovation systLem.
Peters emphasised that the establishment of initiative will help ensure that innovators and researchers have access to the knowledge and practical expertise needed to develop solutions to Namibia's national challenges.
“The TISCDs should ideally be set up in most, if not all, institutions, are the ultimate answer to all the afore-said questions and challenges facing developing countries. Such partnerships are essential in ensuring that our people, particularly the innovators and researchers, are informed, educated and empowered with knowledge and practical know-how to create and produce products and services that address our national challenges.”
Professor Peter's stressed that the NCRST supports research institutions, promotes innovation and helps develop policies and programmes that guide research priorities in the country.
She also highlighted the importance of reliable research and innovation data, saying accurate information is needed to measure Namibia's progress, attract investment and improve international reporting.
The commission is also working to strengthen national research infrastructure by mapping available facilities and equipment at research institutions.
This is expected to make it easier for researchers to identify and access resources needed for their work.
NCRST has thus far completed a national assessment on the country's readiness to adopt, develop and govern artificial intelligence responsibly.
