Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare has paid a courtesy call on Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez in Havana, where he is attending the first Fidel Castro International Colloquium.
 
Díaz-Canel Bermúdez commended Namibia for consistently advocating for the lifting of the U.S. economic embargo on Cuba and for its solidarity campaign in support of the Cuban people.
 
The two leaders discussed the longstanding friendship and bilateral relations between Namibia and Cuba, rooted in Cuba's support for Namibia's liberation struggle.
 
“Given our history, we must stand with Cuba, the Cuban people, and its legitimate government led by President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez. Cuba stood by us in our struggle for independence. When many abandoned us and supported apartheid South Africa, Cuba stood by our side. To honour the legacy of Comandante Fidel Castro, we call on the United Nations to use all its power to compel the United States to lift the embargo against Cuba. Namibia, under the leadership of President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, will do everything possible to help Cuba weather the storm. We are here once again, Your Excellency, to reaffirm that Cuba is not alone.”
 
Dr Ngurare further said Namibia's support for Cuba is grounded in a principle and humanity, stressing that the country will continue to stand with the Cuban people during difficult times.
 
He stated that Namibia's commitment to Cuba is a reflection of the solidarity the country showed Namibia during its struggle for independence.
