The Zambezi Education Directorate has officially launched September as Lifelong Learning Month as part of its efforts to promote lifelong learning and raise public awareness on the importance of community participation in learning opportunities.

The theme is "Literacy for People, the Planet, and Prosperity".

In a speech delivered on her behalf, Zambezi Governor Dorothy Kabula said the theme highlighted the transformative role of literacy in advancing human development, environmental sustainability, and inclusive economic growth.

"It is a call to ensure that no deserving adult is left behind in a rapidly changing world that is becoming increasingly digital and more demanding of skills. The concept of literacy has evolved beyond the ability to read, write, and count. Today, it encompasses the ability to access information online, communicate digitally, protect oneself from misinformation, and engage on virtual platforms that are shaping economies, education, health, and democracy.

One of the programme's beneficiaries, James Chibila, encouraged other adults to take advantage of lifelong learning opportunities.
"I came to encourage people like me, especially those who may be shy about attending the school or who are unaware of its existence. I want to inform you that the school is located at Greenwell Matongo. Do not be shy; the lessons are also offered free of charge."

Some of the activities planned for the month include an Adult Learner's Week, Literacy Day, Namibia Heritage Week, and a Readathon Week, all aimed at promoting the educational initiatives.

The Mayor of Katima Mulilo, Kabende Kabende, also pledged further support for the programme in a speech delivered on his behalf.
