The National Assembly has passed the second reading of the Public Enterprise Governance (PEGA) Bill.

Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare has acknowledged concerns raised by Members of Parliament over the Public Enterprises Governance Amendment Bill, including fears that the proposed changes could give the Prime Minister excessive control over public enterprises.

Dr Ngurare said the government had taken note of the various views and proposals made during the debate, describing them as constructive contributions towards strengthening public enterprise governance.

He said the amendments seek to strengthen the existing framework, improve coordination and enhance accountability.

The Prime Minister thanked MPs for their support and guidance, adding that the government remained open to further engagement to address any concerns and improve the legislation.

"Perhaps if we allow this Bill, then they will be overcontrolled by the Prime Minister. And I'm just trying to speak to the issues that were there. In other words, it was not all supportive. There were others with views that were constructive. And we took note of all those views. And PEGA ega is not new. All that we are doing to Pega is to strengthen it with a view of bringing some degree of synergy, as well as accountability. And therefore, I want to thank all of you, honourable members, variously, in your support, as well as in your guidance of what must be done. And we therefore commit to you that we will work together."
