The Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security, Lucia Iipumbu, says the ministry is strengthening border security through intelligence-led operations, improved border controls and cooperation with other law enforcement agencies to combat drug trafficking.

Iipumbu was responding to a question by IPC MP Immanuel Nashinge regarding the detection and interception of drugs and whether the current staffing levels and resources are sufficient to address security gaps at border posts.

She highlighted Namibia's enhanced regional and international cooperation, particularly through intelligence sharing, joint investigations and operations with neighbouring countries.

"And the joint investigation and operations are conducted continuously. Tracing of supplies and financiers and information exchange concerning suspects moving across the borders. There are also various intelligence-led policing and disruption of drug supply chains, rather than just focusing exclusively on individual and arrested individuals. We are also focusing on the various trends that are trafficking drugs across our countries within the SADC region."

The Minister also provided an update on the management of confiscated exhibits.

"Confiscated drugs, vehicles, and other objects connected to criminal cases are treated as exhibits and must be properly identified, recorded, secured, and preserved because they may be required to be used as evidence when cases go to court."
