Kavango West Regional Police Commander Julia Sakuwa-Neo says road crashes involving pedestrians are a serious concern in the region.

Commissioner Sakuwa-Neo is thus calling on all road users to be vigilant, especially over the festive season.

Namibia recorded over 2,000 road crashes from January to November, of which Kavango West accounted for 164 accidents and seven fatalities.

Sakuwa-Neo says the police will double visibility on the national roads but wants every road user to do their part to reduce motor vehicle accidents.

Sakuwa-Neo is also concerned by the escalating theft of borehole pumps at community water points in the region.

Since August of this year, more than 30 cases of stolen pumps have been reported in Kavango West alone.

She warned those who bought stolen goods and created a market for the thieves that they could be criminally prosecuted.

The Commissioner warned public transport operators to be vigilant, as criminals will try to transport stolen goods using taxis.

The Namibia Public Passenger Transport Association Regional Chairperson cautioned taxi drivers to watch against becoming accomplices to crimes.

Elia Fernandu wants drivers to double-check the identities of those sending the goods so that they are traceable in case the goods are found to have been stolen.

The region launched its festive season road safety and crime prevention campaign at Nkurenkuru.
