Setting goals and resolutions for self-improvement in the New Year is a common practice for some.

However, most resolutions fail due to a lack of strategy and are often rushed, says Relationship Coach and Motivational Speaker, Ngamane Karuaihe-Upi

Karuaihe-Upi says resolutions can only be achieved through self-discipline and control.

"We don't take the time to plan, we don't take the time to strategize how those things are done, so if you read up on this, you'll know that about 70% of resolutions were already discarded by the 19th of January, February, and March, and that 80% to 85% of people who declared resolutions had already abandoned them."

In many cases, Karuaihe-Upi suggests, lofty resolutions fail because of old, bad habits.

He encourages people to set realistic goals for themselves as opposed to setting out to impress others.

Foreversun Haiduwah is a Life Coach and Motivational Speaker says that if you want to travel but your bank account is empty, if you want to start exercising but you don't have running shoes, sweat pants, or whatever else you need to make it happen, you'll give up in a short time, saying, "I thought I would do this, but aah, so the high, artificial, unattainable expectation is what we need to look at and fix because resolution is about you and how to improve your life."

He suggests that people have someone around to remind them of the resolutions they made.
