Supreme Court dismisses Prof. Katjiua's appeal

The Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal filed by Professor Mutjinde Katjiua against a ruling handed down by the Windhoek High Court in April 2022.

 

The highest court of appeal has notified Katjiua that he failed to meet set requirements, and that his appeal is withdrawn, as no further steps were taken.

 

Mutjinde Katjiua last year approached the Court seeking an order interdicting and restraining Vipuira Kapuuo from acting on behalf of the applicant and/or being the duly authorised Acting Paramount Chief of the OvaHerero Traditional Authority.

OTA Chief Council led by Pro Katjiua investigates unsanctioned mining activities

Nama and Ovaherero gather to commemorate 1904-1908 genocide victims

Descendants of the Nama and Ovaherero gathered at Lüderitz in the ||Kharas Region to commemorate 118 years since tens of thousands of their ancestors were killed by the Germans.

The three-day Genocide Remembrance, which started on Friday, was attended by the Ovaherero Traditional Authority and the Nama Traditional Leaders Association.

The Herero and Nama genocide was the massacre of more than 60,000 people on April 22, 1905, by German military forces ordered by General Lothar von Trotha.

Ovaherero Traditional faction opposes uranium mining

A faction of the Ovaherero Traditional Authority under Mutjinde Katjiua is opposing uranium mining exploration in the Stampriet Aquifer Basin.

Headsprings Investment, a subsidiary of Russian state-owned mining giant Uranium One, has received backlash from several concerned groups since it started with exploration in the area.

Many fear that the proposed in-situ leaching mining method is unsafe and that the fresh underground water would possibly become contaminated.

Stock theft at Otjimbingwe rise

The repeated release of suspected stock theft criminals on bail is contributing to rampant stock theft at Otjimbingwe.

This is according to community members who have called on the police and courts not to grant bail to suspects with pending cases.

Farmers in the Otjimbingwe area lose millions of dollars every year due to stock theft.

In 2020, one farmer lost about seven heads of cattle, worth N$98,000, and was forced to make peace with the loss of 11 animals valued at N$110,000 in one incident.

Senate delegates of OTA meeting in Otjimbingwe to elect new Ombara Otjitambi of OvaHerero people

Senate delegates of the OvaHerero Traditional Authority have descended on Otjimbingwe to elect the new Ombara Otjitambi of the OvaHerero people.

The OvaHerero community gathered at the historical village of Otjimbingwe to appoint a leader.

McHenry Venaani, Mike Kavekotora and academic Hoze Riruako are the three men nominated to take over as Ombara Otjitambi.

These elections come after another faction nominated and installed Professor Mutjinde Katjiua at a colorful coronation ceremony as Ombara Otjitambi.
