Public Service Commission visits President Nangolo Mbumba

The Public Service Commission (PSC) paid a visit to President Nangolo Mbumba today to update him on the work they carried out during the 2022–2023 financial year.

After being given a detailed report, the President commended the PSC for its work.

The PSC reported that 753 staff members were appointed in government positions below management, with 82% being promoted to positions below management in the Ministry of Health and Social Services.

PSC aims to computerize current Human Resource System

The Public Service Commission (PSC) wants to computerize and integrate the current Human Resource Management System (HRMS) to meet the demands of the 21st century.

The HRMS in the public service is mostly manual, and the commission fears that this may not address the needs of the workers in the long run.

The Commission's Chairperson, Salmaan Jacobs, says the HR Management System has also been prone to abuse over the years by public servants at some offices, ministries, and agencies.

Public Service Commission calls for study into right-sizing Namibia's public service

The Public Service Commission says a study would be required to look into the realities of the size of the public service and determine what works for the country.

The ever-increasing size of the public service has drawn several opinions and views, following President Hage Geingob's meeting with the Public Service Commission leadership a month ago.

During the meeting, the President asked the Commission to look into the size of public service, considering the unsustainably high wage bill of N$29 billion.

PSC request for a pending review of the Public Service Act accelerated

The Public Service Commission (PSC) wants a pending review of the Public Service Act accelerated, saying the law is creating serious challenges in its current form.

The Public Service Commissioners, led by Chairperson Saalman Jacobs, outlined some of the recommendations to President Hage Geingob and Cabinet Ministers at the State House.

The challenges and recommendations are contained in the annual report.

The review of the Public Service Act of 1995 started with consultations eight years ago, which the Commission says is long overdue.

Geingob appeals to PSC to look into Namibia's public service size

President Hage Geingob has asked the Public Service Commission to look into the size of Namibia's public service, considering the high wage bill.

The post-independence government had to absorb a workforce, including those from the previous apartheid administration.

The current number of employees in the public sector stands at around 107-Thousand raising concerns over a wage bill of more than N$28 billion.

According to the Public Service Commission, 73% of women are employed in lower job categories, compared to 37% of men.
