Tanzania celebrates 60th anniversary of the union

Tanzanians marked the 60th anniversary of the Union in a colourful ceremony in Dar es Salaam.

Union Day is commemorated annually on the 26th of April, signifying the merger of mainland Tanganyika and Zanzibar Island.

Not even the heavy rain that poured in the port city of Dar es Salaam could stop Tanzanians from marking the 60th anniversary of the Union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar Island.

Daures GH Village Project reaches point of no return - Mbumba

President Nangolo Mbumba says the Daures Green Hydrogen Village Project has reached a point of no return.

Dr. Mbumba says all must therefore exercise patience and wait for the project's full realisation.

The President met with the management of Daures Green Hydrogen Village and the leadership of Daure Daman Traditional Authority at State House.

Phase one of the project's construction is nearing completion and is currently 85 percent complete, ahead of its planned launch in July.

National projects should prioritise locals - Daure Daman TA

The Daure Daman Traditional Authority does not want a repeat of what happened when mines in its area of jurisdiction closed down.

The Traditional Authority says the mine closures led to wanton joblessness and poverty within the community.

It says it is not against national projects in its area but has re-iterated that priority must be given to locals.

The leader of the Daure Daman Traditional Authority, Gaob Zacharias Seibeb, made reference to the closure of the Uis Tin Mine in 1991, which led to a massive loss of employment and an exodus of people from Uis.

President Mbumba conveys condolences to Kenya

President Nangolo Mbumba says the government and Namibians at large stand with Kenyans as they mourn the tragic deaths of the Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, General Francis Ogolla, and nine other military officers. 

General Ogolla and the military officials died following a helicopter crash around Elgeyo Marakwet County on Thursday.

Only two people survived the crash and are in critical condition and undergoing treatment.

Brazilian business delegation proposes projects to improve Namibian products

The visiting Brazilian business delegation has proposed projects that would add value to Namibian products.

The delegation led by Brazil's Ambassador Vivian San Martin met President Nangolo Mbumba at State House, marking the conclusion of its weeklong visit to Namibia.

One such project is the processing of yellow maize and the production of cooking oil and rice in Namibia.

Brazil is a major producer of yellow maize, and the delegation says processing the maize here in Namibia offers an opportunity for it to be exported to other SADC countries.

President Mbumba in support of Genocide Remembrance Day

President Nangolo Mbumba says nobody would object to the proposal that the 28th of May be commemorated as Genocide Remembrance Day in Namibia, if that is the common position of all descendants.

The Okandjoze Chiefs Assembly on Genocide sought President Mbumba's intervention in gazetteing the motion to officially promulgate May 28th, Genocide Remembrance Day.

It is also the day on which the genocide victims who were kept in the concentration camps were released.

President Mbumba extends well wishes to Muslims upon ending month-long fasting

President Nangolo Mbumba has extended warm wishes to followers of the Islamic faith in Namibia as they mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

The occasion is known as Eid-al-Fitr, which is one of the two official holidays celebrated within the Islamic faith.

Activities include the festival of breaking the fast after a period of fasting, prayer, and reflection, which is a time of spiritual renewal, self-discipline, and compassion.

Graduates challenged to capitalise on new industries

President Nangolo Mbumba says the new industries of oil, gas, and green hydrogen require graduates to rise to the challenge and play their part in the advancement of Namibia's development agenda.

Dr. Mbumba, in his capacity as Chancellor, delivered the keynote address at UNAM's 104th graduation ceremony in Windhoek.

The graduation ceremony saw students from the School of Accounting, School of Law, School of Business Management, Commerce, and Economics, and the Namibia Business School obtaining qualifications.

President Mbumba conveys condolences to Mozambique

President Nangolo Mbumba has extended condolences to his Mozambican counterpart, Filipe Nyusi, and the people of Mozambique following a ferry tragedy that killed more than 90 people, including children.

The ferry capsized off Mozambique's northern coast in Nampula Province, en route to a nearby island, on Sunday.

According to local media reports, some survivors managed to reach the island's shore but died there as they were not able to get medical help on time, bringing the death toll to 98 people.

EU, German diplomats reminded to respect Vienna Convention principles

The Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation (MIRCO) has maintained that the government has no objection as to who diplomatic missions accredited to Namibia engage. 

It says, however, that discussions on issues that are the sole preserve and prerogative of the sending and host governments, with a conversant not representing the government, are inconsistent with diplomatic practices and akin to interference in the domestic affairs of the country.
