Walvis Bay leaders call for innovative solutions to youth unemployment

Some prominent members of the Walvis Bay community have called for innovative and effective solutions to youth unemployment.
 
Among them are former Walvis Bay Mayor King Mandume Muatunga as well as the coastal town's Lutheran Hosiana Parish Pastor Jacky Fredericks, who believe government efforts to create employment must be complemented.

Coordinated efforts to end drug abuse needed

A social athlete and activist against the use of harmful drugs has called for a coordinated effort to stop drug abuse in Namibia.

Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (nbc) employee Martha Namhadi says the fight against drug abuse should be a collective one. Namhadi spoke to nbc News after participating in the 10-kilometre FNB/Seawork Marathon at Swakopmund. The seasonal marathon runner says rooting out drug abuse requires a collective effort from individuals, families, communities, and organisations.

Walvis Bay Municipality's decongestion plan

The Municipality of Walvis Bay is looking at several strategies to decongest the suburb of Kuisebmund and reduce the risk of shack fires. This includes the introduction of rates and taxes for each shack on allocated plots.

Backyard shacks have become a source of income for the residents who rent them out, but they are also a source of despair for tenants when fires break out.

The mushrooming of shacks in the informal settlements has also, in recent years, been a headache for the municipality.
