COVID-19 volunteers demand consideration for 800 vacancies

Volunteers from COVID-19 whose contracts were terminated staged a demonstration, demanding that they be considered for the more than 800 vacancies released by the government.

The Ministry of Labour and Employment Creation plans to recruit all COVID-19 volunteers from government grades 12 to 15.

The volunteers believe it is unfair that they have not been considered after three years of sacrifices, during which some of their colleagues died of COVID-19.

Some Keetmanshoop residents demand reinstatement of Dr Refanus Kooper

Some residents of Keetmanshoop marched to the State Hospital, demanding the reinstatement of well-known medical Doctor, Refanus Kooper. 

Dr. Kooper left public service to go open up a private practice in the Hardap Region.

They also called for the immediate removal of the Director of Health in the ||Kharas Region. 

Residents marched through the streets of Keetmanshoop carrying placards and singing songs, praising Doctor Kooper for his passion for patients.

Keetmanshoop Municipality workers demonstrate against council's treatment to some employees

A group of Keetmanshoop Municipality workers is accusing the council of giving preferential treatment to some employees.

They staged a demonstration in the town, led by the Namibia Public Workers Union (NAPWU).

The protestors singled out the municipality's acting CEO, Hansina Isaacks, as one of those favored by the council, as well as members affiliated with the Namibia Local Authorities Workers Union.

Warmbad residents demonstrate over alleged lack of economic development at the tiny settlement

Residents of Warmbad in the ||Kharas Region staged a demonstration in protest over an alleged lack of economic development at the tiny settlement.

Disgruntled residents say they demonstrate to vent their rage over alleged failures by various government agencies to bring services to the area.

They handed over a petition to the Warmbad Settlement Office.

Walvis Bay Municipal workers protest against alleged bullying, mismanagement of funds

Hundreds of employees of the Walvis Bay municipality staged a demonstration to express their dismay over the alleged bullying and mismanagement of public funds by the municipal council.

The employees marched through the streets of Walvis Bay holding up colourful posters with messages such as "No to Worker Victimization and Respect the Recognition Agreement".

This is to show their dissatisfaction with how the council is running the town's affairs. 

The staff alleges that the council bullies workers and has spent more than N$600,000 on unnecessary legal bills.

Learners and teachers at Onawa Secondary School demand water at their school

Learners and teachers of the Onawa Secondary School in Omusati Region's Anamulenge Circuit held a demonstration over the shortage of water supply there.

The group marched to the office of the Omusati Education Director at Outapi.

Teachers and learners say the school has been experiencing water shortages for almost five years as a result of low water pressure in the tanks.

Sometimes the tanks at school run completely dry, and at other times only a few drops of water come out.

Otjiwarongo Municipality employees demands for a once-off, undisclosed payment

About 160 employees of the Otjiwarongo Municipality have taken to the streets to demand a once-off, undisclosed payment as compensation for a failed salary and wage negotiation for the 2021–2022 financial year.

The workers, under NAPWU, are demanding their dues as all efforts were allegedly met with disapproval by the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni.

Tunacor factory workers demonstrate against alleged unfair treatment

Hundreds of factory workers at the Tunacor Fishing Company in Walvis Bay staged a demonstration to protest against alleged unfair treatment by management.

The employees allege that they are given warnings without being given a chance to defend themselves, which they say is unfair.

They also claim that they are denied the right to be represented by trade unions during disciplinary hearings.

Employee turnover at the company, they say, is also high and workers are dismissed over minor issues and, in many cases, unfairly.
