The demand for affordable plots saw a group of Kalkfeld settlement residents take to the streets, asking the Otjozondjupa Regional Council to allocate them serviced land.

The group says they are tired of living in squalor and overcrowded housing.

The demonstrators claim they have been waiting for plots since 2018.

"We are tired of living with the great-grandparents and grandchildren in the same houses. We will continue to demonstrate until demarcation starts and takes place, and we are tired of the empty promises of the Otjozondjupa Regional Council as well. We are not forcing the demarcation to take place because we know the funds are available, and that's why we are not forcing you guys to do the demarcation. So the funds are available. Please just do your work," said Michelin Judith, Chairperson of the Kalkfeld Concerned Group.

The petition was received by Kalkfeld Settlement Officer Freedom Amwandi, who promised to forward it to the authorities.

Residents have threatened to petition the Minister of Urban and Rural Development should their petition not receive a favorable response within two weeks.
