The Minister of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication, and Social Welfare has called on the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology to expedite the passing of the Cybercrime Bill to protect children while online.

Doreen Sioka made the remarks at the commemoration of the Day of the African Child at Rosh Pinah in the ||Kharas Region.

According to UNICEF's 2020 report, 9% of Namibia's population between the ages of 12 and 17 has experienced online sexual abuse and exploitation.

The report also says that 30% of children who experienced online abuse did not disclose their experiences to anyone.

The Day of the African Child's theme, "The Rights of the Child in the Digital Environment," highlights the emerging development challenges facing Namibia.

"It is our duty to create a protective shield around our children, ensuring their safety online. To achieve this, we need to promote digital literacy and education for children, parents, and educators alike. Schools should integrate digital literacy into their curriculum, teaching children about online safety, privacy, and critical thinking," said Sioka.

The Social Welfare Minister further stated that meaningful access to digital technologies can support children in realising their civil, political, cultural, economic, and social rights.

"Considering the theme of this year's Day of the African Child, the Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication, and Social Welfare is pleased to announce the launch of a ground-breaking initiative-the Childcare and Protection Database. This electronic case management database for child protection cases and programmes marks a significant milestone."

Speaking on behalf of UNICEF's country representative, Child Protective Specialist Celeste Feris called on parents and children to report incidents of abuse.

"To the children who are here today, I urge you to report those types of cases when people ask you to share information about you online. I ask you to tell your parents about it. I also urge you to tell teachers social workers and police who will handle these cases confidentially and provide the necessary services and support."

Children from the Oranjemund Constituency entertained those in attendance.
