The National Council hosted the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation to strengthen their long-standing relationship.
Highlighting the importance of continued collaboration through "friendship groups for cooperation," the week-long visit had various activities, including touring the Parliament, visiting the Heroes Acre, and the tomb of the late President Hage Geingob to honour and respect him for the work he has contributed for his country.
They also reflected on the historical ties between Namibia and Russia and their bilateral agreement signed in Moscow in 2023.
"The same agreement that I was referring to formed a friendship group; now this is the friendship group that was established and led by Yelena, to Namibia, so we will then be looking at how the two friendship groups—the Russian Federation and the National Council—will be working together, referring to Russia and Namibia," said Lukas Muha, National Council Chairperson.
He emphasised Russia's support during Namibia's liberation struggle and post-independence diplomatic relations.
Russia's Senator Yelena Perminova reiterated her country's commitment to fostering stronger ties within the friendship group.
"This friendship group is of great importance; it is really important to us to know how Namibia works, and we would like to know in detail how it operates and what we can take and learn from their experience."
Namibia's National Council and the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation have an agreement that seeks to facilitate the interaction and cooperation between Members of Parliament and staff of the two countries.
