Former Mafwe Litunga Richard Mamili V has died aged 92.

The death of Litunga Mamili, who died in Rundu Hospital, was announced by the Mafwe Traditional Authority.

His death coincided with the Lusata annual cultural festival, which he founded 43 years ago.

Muhinda-Mamili V was coronated as Litunga of the Mafwe tribe 53 years ago.

He previously worked as a police sergeant in the Botswana Police Service before his chieftaincy role.

He replaced Noah Mamili IV, who led the Mafwe community from 1944 to 1971.

He was the seventh leader whose reign lasted sixteen years when he was replaced by Boniface Mamili.

During his reign, he also served as Chief Minister in the then Administration for Caprivians, a position that alternated between him and the former Masubia Chief, Joshuwa Moraliswani.

He was buried under the chieftainship traditions of the region, where chiefs are buried less than 30 hours after death.

The late Litunga Mamili is survived by three wives, 37 children, 122 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.
