Employees of the national broadcaster, nbc, have been urged to maintain a healthy work environment as key to creating a high-performing organisation.
The corporation's Director General, Stanley Similo, made the call during a meeting at Otjiwarongo, where he addressed staff on the topic of building a collaborative and respectful workplace.
Similo stressed the importance of working in a healthy environment.
"If we are not united as a team, these things will start affecting us and how we greet each other in the morning. If I am angry, I will not want to talk to you, and ultimately that will impact our listeners and viewers and generally people who like what the nbc is doing, but the main thing is that a bad culture will endanger itself. And I think this is really something that we need to work hard on, all of us. To make sure that we don't fall into a trap where we will end up doing insane things. That is more ignited by our own personal feelings, and that becomes dangerous."
He also addressed the need for teamwork and for employees to steer away from contributing to toxic environments characterised by office gossip, mistrust, and silos, which he said affect staff morale.
The Director General also touched on the organisation's strategic intent, which includes requirements for optimal performance, cost reduction, and revenue collection.
"There is one thing that brings us together as nbc, it's our strategic intent, and that intent speaks to three things that we must do, and they are pillared. One is performance and compliance; we must perform well; we must comply with all those things that govern us, and some of them must be statutory and others are legal; others are environmental; and others are linked to programmes that we produce, as we are regulated. So we must adhere to these things. And equally when we talk about cost reduction. Our main goal is to make a minimum of N$100 million per year. That puts pressure on us as well in terms of the way we operate; it wouldn't matter where we are. All of us must contribute."
Similo expressed his desire for different departments to work together to achieve projected profits, which in turn provide an incentive to remunerate employees based on performance.
The DG was accompanied by the Strategic Leaders Teams of executives, where they also supported the nbc Otjiwarongo Fun Run Finale.
