The Walvis Bay Municipality has allocated approximately 2,500 plots to different housing schemes in the town.
Walvis Bay Mayor Trevino Forbes announced this during his address at the showcasing of Portion 18 of Farm 37, hosted by the October Seafarers United Land and Housing Federation, which was held at Farm 37.
Forbes stressed that while fairness goes hand in hand with land allocation, there is a sense of entitlement among different members.
"However, some members exhibit a sense of entitlement, which is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated by us as leaders of Walvis Bay. So we need to deal with these things, colleagues. If you have a plot, if the council gives you a plot and you know your plot can yield 500 plots, it is not correct for you to sell 2,000 plots. Where will you get the remaining 500?"
He urged the groups to refrain from fighting among themselves.
"Then we find ourselves dealing with petitions to the municipality with infighting; it cannot be the case, colleagues. We need to handle our internal businesses ourselves because when this land was allocated, you came to the municipality of Walvis Bay, to the office of the mayor, and to the chairperson of the management committee."
He applauded the fishing companies that are reaching out to the municipality to build houses for their employees.
"I am happy to see some of the representatives of the fishing companies also reached out to the municipality of Walvis Bay, saying we need land to build houses for our people that work in our factories; we should look favourably upon those applications as leaders because alone we cannot do it. We need the assistance, and we need the co-operation of all stakeholders, including the private companies."
