NUDO MP Vetaruhe Kandorozu sought clarity from the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) regarding the deregistration of the Miss Namibia Organisation from the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) and for it to be sold to a private entity.

Minister Emma Theofelus, in her response, stressed that the intention is to make the pageant independent, as it relies solely on the broadcaster.

Kandorozu asked, "Miss Namibia is owned by NBC. So as we speak now, the current board has resolved to deregister Ms Namibia under NBC so that it can go back to being a private entity that will be owned by an individual again. So I just want to know, are you aware of this? Did the cabinet approve the deregistration of Miss Namibia?"

Minister Theofelus stated that there were discussions to make Miss Namibia Organisation more independent rather than solely relying on the public broadcaster.

"There have been talks about making Ms Namibia a bit more independent from NBC because right now it's very dependent on the cooperation. But Ms Namibia is more than the broadcaster. It's about culture. It's about our heritage. It's about creativity. And that can only not be pegged on the broadcaster."

NBC Board Chairperson Lazarus Jacobs earlier stated that it would be too costly to make Miss Namibia an independent entity.

Jacobs stated that there are therefore no plans to deregister the Miss Namibia Organisation, saying it will fully resort under the Commercial Department of the national broadcaster.
