Three hundred ninety-eight people graduated from UNAM's Rundu Campus in Kavango East.

The graduation at the Rundu Trade Fair Centre was made of eager guests, excited graduates and proud family members.

Guest speaker at this year's graduation ceremony, Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare told the graduates to use skills gained to improve their societal conditions.

" You will be contributing to a sustainable inclusive national economy. Use research and innovation to provide solutions to economic and development challenges we face. Be the fighters against poverty. Work against inequality, underdevelopment, and social and material deprivations."

He spoke to graduates about the harsh realities of life outside the lecture halls.

" However harsh and cruel this life may be, or may be to you, so much that you may be tempted to give up, or resort to alcohol or drug abuse or, worse still, end your life, please don't. Remember, you are the star, shining in the moment of darkness. You are the light, you are the compass of your community. Embrace those temporary moments of failure because success belongs to those who fail and pick themselves up."

The graduates received qualifications in accounting, business, law, nursing and education.

Some of the graduates NBC news spoke to admitted that the academic path is hard and that they were tempted to throw in the towel.

They, however, managed to persevere, and these are their plans for the future.

Graduate in the Bachelor of Nursing Science and Clinical, Stephen Kazibe, said, "The future has got a lot of opportunities ahead, and I am looking forward to it. For now it's a bachelor's degree; I obviously want to do a master's degree, so for now I am thinking of going back into the community, working for the community for two years, and after that, probably pursuing a master's degree in public health."

Nicolaus Marupa, who also graduated with a bachelor's in education, says, "For some of us, like for me, I am being inspired by a lot of people out there in my community, so I am currently not looking into getting a job I just want to study, study and study until I get what I want."

Bachelor of Nursing Science Clinical, Honours, Nehemia Muunda says "My plan for the future is that I want to continue studying until I reach my PhD." I want to keep on upgrading. "

The Deputy Minister of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, Anselm Marungu, also received a diploma in lifelong learning and community education.
