Grootfontein Municipality plans to relocate 65 families currently residing in single quarters to new social housing units. The relocation, initially scheduled for last year, was delayed due to the installation of prepaid water meters and some families lacking deeds of sale.
Indileni Lungameni, Acting CEO of Grootfontein Municipality, said, “We first called the people to come and sign the contracts, but the message may not have reached all, causing delays. Currently, plans are underway to ensure the 65 qualifying families will vacate the single quarters by 9 May.”
The municipality will also proceed with constructing 140 additional social houses to accommodate the remaining qualifying families.
“Council remains committed to delivering on strategic objectives related to land and housing, as well as creating a conducive environment through quality services. Those who qualify for housing loans under the Build Together programme will be catered for through housing schemes, while those unable to afford loans have been provided land allocation letters,” Lungameni added.
The plan includes relocating all families and demolishing the blocks to facilitate new development.
