The Inspector General of the Namibian Police has called on the public to observe traffic laws and regulations for an accident-free festive season.
Lieutenant General Joseph Shikongo, who had meetings in the Ohangwena Region, also called on all peace-loving Namibians to put extra energy into fighting crimes.
The Police Chief had a series of activities and discussions with the public as well as the business community to discuss and solicit input from them on issues pertaining to service delivery and the contribution that the public can make to fight security challenges.
At Eenhana, he inaugurated 21 police barracks for men before engaging the business community and the general public.
From there, he proceeded to the Helao Nafidi Business Center, where he addressed the public, the business community, and political leaders.
There, he informed the gathering that the police officers are ready and on the ground to fight all kinds of crimes tooth and nail during the festive season and beyond.
Ohangwena is one of the regions with a high crime rate.
As of December 1, 2021, through November 30, 2022, the region recorded about 664 crimes, with rape topping the list with 197 reported cases.
Other crimes on the rise include gender-based violence, murder, attempted murder, and assault.
Ohangwena Governor Walde Ndevashiya urged the community to assist the police in fighting all criminal activities, including those happening in their areas and residences.
The Inspector General will also inaugurate the Ongha Police Station next week.
