Residents of Oimba-dalunga in the Ohangwena Region were the first to witness the flood waters coming into Namibia from Angola on Friday.

Some access roads leading to Engela hospital and surrounding villages from Oimbadalunga have already been flooded.

Scores of residents and visitors alike have been frequenting the oshanas in the area to witness the flash flood waters emanating from neighboring Angola. This follows heavy rains received in that country over the past few days.

Within minutes, the dry Oshanas became full to the brim, and as the days' progress, more water is expected to cover a large area of land.

Those we spoke to said they heard the warning of impending floods on the news but did not prepare themselves in case of any eventualities.

"We heard this announcement on the radio, and now it's very serious; we see the water live, and our kids who are going to school are affected. Ondiilokelwa Primary School and Onghala are now cut off. We demand that our government do something to come and assist us."

On Wednesday, water from the Cuvelai catchment flowed towards the Namibia-Angola borders from the direction of Ondjiva and Namakunde.

Communities living along the Namibia-Angola border in the Ohangwena Region have been cautioned to take precautionary measures against eminent flooding and are discouraged from crossing the oshanas during this time.

Earlier in the week, the Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform's Senior Hydrologist Leonard Hango said they were on the ground monitoring the situation in order to provide prompt updates to the public.

Police officers from the region were also seen patrolling the area in order to provide assistance to the residents should the need arise.
