Oshakati TC awards prime plot to Mouse Properties

The Oshakati Town Council, under the stewardship of town mayor Leonard Hango, has resolved to endorse the sale of a controversial 1.7 hectare prime land deal that has been in the courts to Mouse Properties Ninety Eight, owned by business mogul Erastus 'Chicco' Shapumba, which was sold then for N$2.5 million dollars, way beyond its market value.

The council this morning resolved to set the new price at N$5.6 million.

Onawa electrification project commences

The electrification project at Onawa reception area extensions seven and eight have commenced following a groundbreaking ceremony.

The new development will cover 770 erven.

In its five-year strategic plan, the Oshakati Town Council plans to formalise all informal settlements to provide basic services such as water, sewerage, and electricity.

The electrification of Onawa will cost the council N$11.5 million.

Level of Zambezi River rises rapidly over the past week

The level of the Zambezi River has been rising rapidly in the past week after a drop of about three metres in the past months.

The floodplains in Kabbe South and North have started receiving flood waters as the Zambezi River started bursting its banks again.

Over the past years, the annual floods from the Zambezi River started in January and February, and the water started subsiding towards the end of March.

Schools in the flood plains are the only dry areas because they are constructed on higher ground, while all other areas are flooded.

Oimba-dalunga residents witness the flood waters

Residents of Oimba-dalunga in the Ohangwena Region were the first to witness the flood waters coming into Namibia from Angola on Friday. 

Some access roads leading to Engela hospital and surrounding villages from Oimbadalunga have already been flooded. 

Scores of residents and visitors alike have been frequenting the oshanas in the area to witness the flash flood waters emanating from neighboring Angola. This follows heavy rains received in that country over the past few days. 

Namibia has still not recorded any flood water in Cuvelai

Namibia has still not recorded flood water in the Cuvelai catchment from southern Angola.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform's Senior Hydrologist for the Cuvelai-Etosha basin, Leonard Hango, says a flash flood from the Cuvelai catchment is flowing towards the Namibia-Angola borders from the direction of Ondjiva and Namakunde. 

In an interview with nbc News along the Namibia-Angola border at Onghala Village, Hango said the flood waters have not yet reached the Namibian side but they are monitoring the situation.

Naiti Combined School in need of extra classrooms

The Naiti Combined School in Okalongo Circuit of the Omusati Region is in need of extra classrooms, an administration block, chairs and desks, as well as teacher houses and ablution facilities.

Speaking at the school's inaugural as its patron, Oshakati Mayor and Senior Hydrologist Leonard Hango said addressing children's educational needs is a shared responsibility, adding that sitting idle while waiting on the government to provide all educational amenities won't do Namibians much good.

The Naiti Combined School in Okalongo Circuit in Omusati Region is in need of an extra classroom, an administration block, teacher's houses, chairs and tables, and ablution facilities.

The school started as a mission school in 1972 and was transformed into a government school in the early 1980s.

The school welcomed its patron, Oshakati Mayor Leonard Hango, who is now a friend of the school.

UNAM's Hifikepunye Pohamba Campus hosts multi-disciplinary research conference

The University of Namibia's Hifikepunye Pohamba Campus at Oshakati, Oshana Region, is hosting a two-day multi-disciplinary research conference.

The main purpose of the conference is to share research findings and create collaborative links between academics, stakeholders, and renowned professional practitioners at their workplaces.

In her address, Professor Nelago Iindongo, Director of the Center for Research Services, said UNAM endeavours to become a research-led university.

Oshakati Town Council's mayoral development fund gala dinner raises over half a million dollars

More than half a million dollars was raised at the recently launched Mayoral Development Fund gala dinner for the Oshakati Town Council.

The fund is aimed at raising money to help the needy and vulnerable members of society.

Oshakati Mayor Leonard Hango says his council is faced with the challenge of rural-urban migration, with people now squatting in informal settlements.

The council also wants to create land and housing for residents, which means it is leading in land and housing development in the entire country.
