Omaheke police applaud holiday makers for good behaviour

Police in the Omaheke Region have expressed gratitude to the region's residents and holidaymakers for abiding by the laws during the festive season.

Acting Regional Commander, Deputy Commissioner Jacxon Kamwangha, says the region is one of those that records low crime rates throughout the year.

It's the festive season, and the streets of Gobabis, the region's capital, are mostly empty as many of the town's residents have travelled to villages to spend time with their loved ones.

Drought kills 100 cattle at Okomungondo

Farmers at Okomungondo Village in the Omaheke Region have lost 100 heads of cattle due to drought.


The Vice Headman of Okomungondo, Tjipetekera Kamuhanga, told nbc News that this year's drought affected many households livelihoods.

He says farmers could also not sell their livestock because of the prices that have gone down.

The water shortage has also worsened the situation as existing water infrastructure has dilapidated.

Health Promoting Initiative Benefits Omaheke Schools

All 47 schools in the Omaheke Region are part of the Health Promoting Initiative Programme, aimed at improving their health and strengthening the teaching environment for better performance.

The initiative is a collaboration between the Ministries of Education and Health and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Omaheke Governor Pijoo Nganate emphasised that quality education should be accompanied by good health. Hence, the initiative should be coordinated in a manner that will address health challenges in schools.

Omaheke Farmers Protest Granting of Bail to Stock Theft Suspects

Farming communities in the Omaheke Region are objecting to the granting of bail to suspects who are involved in stock theft.

The group is of the opinion that stock theft has become a serious concern in recent years, and this has robbed them of their livelihoods.

Reading the petition, the Chairperson of the Community Against Stock Theft Organisation, Nanda Murangi, says most of the suspects of stock theft are repeat offenders and always get away with bail.

Landless Farmers at Gobabis Seek Resettlement Land

A group of concerned farmers residing on the outskirts of Gobabis are demanding usable agricultural land.

The farming community sought an audience with the regional leadership to address the issue, as farming within the municipal area is against the law.

The group spokesperson, Petrina Awa-Eieses, says that most farmers on Gobabis townlands are former farm workers who were dumped by their employers in town some years ago.

Omaheke villages battle veldfires

Villages in the eastern part of Otjinene Constituency, bordering the Eiseb area in the Omaheke Region, are battling a veldfire that has destroyed vegetation and much-needed grazing.

Oturauhane Village Headman, Alfons Tjipetekera, says the persistent windy conditions have made the already strong fire difficult to extinguish.

Tjipetekera added that with available assistance from the government, the fire can hopefully be put out.

He, however, fears that the grazing land on which the farmers depend will be completely destroyed.

119th anniversary of Ozombuzovindimba commemorated

A group of Ovaherero community members, under the leadership of Dr. Hoze Riruako, converged at the historical site Ozombuzovindimba in the Omaheke Region for the 119th annual commemoration. Ozombuzovindimba is a historical place for the Ovaherero community, as many died there during the 1904 genocide through an extermination order.

Speaking at Ozombuzovindimba's 119th annual commemoration, Dr. Hoze Riruako says an order resulted in not only the deaths of many but also robbed the community of its wealth.

Police train 240 Cadet Constables

A group of 224 Cadet Constables are on a six-month police basic training course at the Pius Joseph Kaundu Training Centre in the Omaheke Region. The Inspector General of the Namibian Police, Lieutenant General Joseph Shikongo, who was speaking at the official opening of the training, says the success of the training is expected to strengthen manpower.
