The Councillor of Rundu Rural Constituency in the Kavango East Region, Paulus Mbangu, has suggested that government implement a basic income grant that will cater to every unemployed Namibian and so combat poverty and unemployment in the country.

In his contribution to the national budget for 2023/24 in the National Council, Mbangu emphasized, that the grant would prove crucial to tackling pressing socio-economic issues.

"I am seeking concurrence in this house that the government should implement the basic income grant. Every unemployed person should receive at least N$500. It's not a lot of money, and no one will become lazy because of N$500."

Mbangu explained that the grant would serve as a safety net for those who for long have been left outside of mainstream society, and he has a formula on how to balance the scale.

He is aware of the current and tough economic times that lie ahead, but it is his prayer that somewhere, some leader will consider his plea.
