The Police Inspector-General, Lieutenant General Joseph Shikongo, and the Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety, and Security, Dr. Albert Kawana, have encouraged more individuals to join the community police units in their respective regions.
Speaking during a community meeting in Zambezi, Lieutenant General Shikongo applauded the region's high number of volunteers who are actively engaged in the community police programme.
He further stated that, in order to encourage more people to join, the police force and ministry would consider individuals who are committed to fighting crime for future job opportunities.
"Out of these people here, the coming recruitment, I want the top five performers to be submitted in Windhoek to be recruited in the police, the top five performers, to become permanent members of the Namibian Police Force, monitor them; I don't want the names today; monitor the most performing, and this is what we're going to do to all the regions that have organised themselves to ensure that we recruit the men and women network."
Lieutenant General Shikongo also announced that he would be opening an account for the male and female units of the community police. As a personal contribution, he donated N$2,000 to assist with various needs, including transportation when reporting for duty and providing airtime for them to report criminal activities promptly.
Dr. Kawana reiterated the Inspector General's points regarding the importance of providing necessary support and resources to community police members.
Kawana also encouraged the youth to abstain from engaging in criminal activities and instead focus on preparing for their futures.
"The enemy of today is unemployment; the enemy of today is underdevelopment; the enemy of today is poverty; but the mission is this: we are aware as government of unemployment, hunger, poverty, and underdevelopment, but we need to forge ahead, which is why we give education a priority above all other priorities."
