The Katima Mulilo Border Post between Namibia and Zambia is now operational 24 hours a day.

The around-the-clock operation was launched by the Ministers of Home Affairs following a decision taken by the two countries governments in Livingstone in April this year.

Namibia's Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety, and Security, Dr. Albert Kawana, noted that the introduction of 24-hour operation for the Katima Mulilo Border Post is another milestone for both countries.

Dr. Kawana believes that the move will have great economic benefits for both countries.

"Those in charge of security must ensure that goods do not get stolen from trucks at night while waiting to be cleared. Therefore, I expect a seamless operation at this place. This objective can only be achieved if there is better coordination between and among all stakeholders."

Kawana noted that the strategic location of the border post will promote trade relations and reduce costs for the business community.

"I also believe that the port of Walvis Bay stands to benefit from this development. This is one of the most efficient ports on the west coast of Africa, as rated by international institutions. Therefore, port authorities are called upon to take advantage of this positive development and adjust their operations accordingly."

According to the Zambian Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Affairs, Jacob Mwiimbu, the new development consolidates the ever-expanding bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

"This launch is of significance to our two countries, the region, and the continent at large. It seeks to address some impediments to trade growth and competitiveness in Africa in line with the main objectives of the African Continent Free Trade Agreement, of which our two countries are part."

Mwiimbu reiterated that the movement of people and goods has also been made smoother, while trade volumes through the Walvis Bay-Lumbumbashi Corridor are also expected to increase.

"This aligns with Zambia's eight national development plan strategy of facilitating increased domestic and international trade through coordinated intra- and inter-border management."

Mwiimbu urged border officials of both countries to be innovative in introducing strategies to make the border a choice for all travellers.
