Six men, arrested in Rundu in connection with fraud committed at Bank Windhoek's Opuwo Branch, made a brief appearance before the Rundu Magistrate's Court today.

They were denied bail, and the case was postponed until January 25.

The six are linked to the alleged mastermind behind the large-scale fraud, Nico Rebebe, who allegedly stole N$2 million from his employer.

It is alleged that  Rebebe approached the six, promising them jobs at a farm, and one of the requirements was for them to open accounts with Bank Windhoek, where he would facilitate their monthly payments.

One suspect was arrested in the bank while trying to withdraw cash over the counter, while the others were picked up at different places within Rundu.

The six allegedly benefited in amounts varying from N$200,000 to N$500,000.

The six will be transferred to Opuwo, where the initial fraud case was registered, and are scheduled to appear in the Opuwo Magistrate's Court on January 25.

In a related development, Bank Windhoek Managing Director, Baronice Hans, says there is confusion about the facts surrounding last Saturday's theft incident at the bank's Opuwo branch.

Providing clarity, Hans explains that there was indeed an attempt to steal N$200 million, but the bank's robust security protocols, strong internal controls, established thresholds, and the vigilance of employees foiled the attempt. 

This, she points out, resulted in a confirmed loss to Bank of just below N$2 million, and that could only be confirmed in the days following the incident. Hans points out that the bank is now focused on collaborating with the Namibian Police to ensure a thorough and successful resolution of the matter.

Bank Windhoek has offered a reward of N$20,000 to anyone who will provide information that will lead to the successful apprehension of Rebebe.
