The death toll in last Friday's hand grenade explosion, in which two people died at their homestead in Lumina Village in the Mpacha area of the Zambezi Region, has risen to three.

The family of four—the 34-year-old father, Kashako Mulatehi, and his three children, Mulatehi Mulatehi, Yamuno Mulatehi, and Lydia Mulatehi—were all involved in the explosion.

14-year-old Yamuno Mulatehi died on the spot, while his 9-year-old sister, Lydia Mulatehi, died at the Katima Mulilo State Hospital, where they were rushed for medical care.

The critically injured father, Kashako Mulatehi, and his remaining child, Mulatehi Mulatehi, were transferred to Windhoek for further medical care on Friday night.

Police Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi confirmed this afternoon that the three-year-old Mulatehi Mulatehi succumbed to his injuries in the hospital yesterday (Wednesday) morning.

The remaining survivor of the family and father, Kashako Mulatehi, is still fighting for his life in the hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

A report by the Namibian police in Zambezi states that the victims were collecting scrap metal in the Liselo area, where they also picked up the hand grenade.

Upon arrival at their homestead in Lumina Village, the father, while in the presence of his three children, began pounding the device with an axe, causing it to explode.
