In response to LPM's Utaara Mootu's inquiry about bed shortages at the Katutura Intermediate Hospital, Health Minister Kalumbi Shangula attributed the issue to the high numbers of lodger mothers accompanying admitted babies, causing overcrowding.

Dr. Shangula informed the house that a decision was made to allow mothers to stay with their admitted babies to promote recovery and bonding, considering separating them at such a critical time would not be beneficial.

He acknowledged, however, that this arrangement has led to security concerns and damage to amenities designed for children within the hospital.

He stated that the matter is receiving immediate attention.

"The Cabinet has approved the costed plan for mobilisation of additional resources to strengthen the public health system. The plan is costing more than N$16 billion and involves the implementation of different interventions such as the renovation, expansion, and modernization of physical infrastructure, recruitment of health professionals in different disciplines.
Other interventions include the establishment of dialysis units across the country as well as the establishment of intensive care units in all district hospitals around the country."

He emphasised that these projects aim to bring services closer to people, reducing the need for long-distance travel to access care.

This initiative is integral to the ministry's pursuit of universal health care coverage.

Dr. Shangula assured the house that dedicated health workers are making every effort, and their hard work should be recognised for their commitment to maintaining the health of Namibians.

''Whereas we welcome positive criticism, due credit will incentivize health professionals to put more effort into their work. Members of this august house who have worked as nurses will agree with me that it is not easy for a nurse who just witnessed a patient dying to be confronted by an aggressive patient, client, or family member. After all, health workers are just humans.''
