Substantial work has already commenced in Namibia’s renewable energy sector, particularly the green hydrogen, and investments are welcome.

President Nangolo Mbumba expounded on the country’s energy agenda, including plans to make it a hub for the production of clean energy, during the high-level panel discussion of the Hamburg Sustainability Conference.

He shared that Namibia is developing a portfolio of green hydrogen projects, which will help accelerate the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals.

The Namibian leader singled out the Hyphen Project as an example in which the government has committed to investing.

The project aims to produce 2 million tonnes of green ammonia, which President Mbumba said should abate 5 to 6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

Dr. Mbumba further outlined that the project will produce excess water and electricity, which will be channelled into local pipelines and the grid.

This process will allow Namibia to deal with improving basic service delivery to the citizens, he said.

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Germany has committed to be an off-taker of clean energy while calling for the practical implementation of the SDGs.

He said Germany is further advocating for internationally binding measures on clean energy supplies as well as pioneering alliances.
