Namibia's progress in gender equality took the spotlight at the 149th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Geneva, where the National Council’s Vice-Chairperson Victoria Kauma emphasised the country's efforts through initiatives like the National Gender Policy and the Rural Women Parliament.

Despite the progress, challenges remain, particularly at regional and constituency levels, where women are still under-represented.

Kauma stressed the need for targeted support and capacity-building initiatives to help women achieve their political aspirations.

"There is a need for women with political capabilities and aspirations to be capacitated and supported in their quest for public office, both socially and more formally through targeted policies and interventions."

She praised the impact of the 50/50 gender representation policy by the SWAPO party, which has led to 40% female representation in parliament, and expressed hope for the future of women in leadership as Namibia prepares for the upcoming elections on November 27, 2024.
