The Inspector General of the Namibian Police, Joseph Shikongo, says the government is committed to improving the facilities where the police are operating to make their working conditions conducive.
The Inspector General of the Namibian Police is in the Zambezi Region conducting site visits at the various projects being implemented in the region. In Katima Mulilo, the latest project is the construction of the Greenwell Matongo Police Station, being built on a plot adjacent to the Choto Informal Settlement.
"Greenwell Matongo is one of the biggest projects of the police in the region. Recalling that Zambezi Region has a class A station, which is Katima Mulilo, which is indeed very old. We did some renovations, but I think looking at the population, the growing population of Zambezi, particularly Katima Mulilo, we need to put up another station."
Inspector General Shikongo noted that the region has completed various successful projects in the region, such as police posts at Singalamwe and Kalimbeza. He noted that there are also ongoing projects, while some are in the pipeline.
"We flew to another area where we are envisaging to put up some structures; one of them is Cheto, and from Cheto we went to Susuwe; those are the areas we are looking at. So as we were flying along, there is also a project of demining and debushing the border area, so now you can drive all the way from Beacon 1 here in Katima to Beacon 9 at Singalamwe."
Shikongo says the police are committed to ensuring that the living and working conditions of police officers are top-class.
