Gender-based violence and sexual assault are global issues that threaten the lives and futures of young girls and women, and they remain a significant concern in Namibia.

An Intergenerational Dialogue took place yesterday, featuring panel discussions aimed at addressing these issues and exploring ways to prevent them.

One of the topics discussed was teenage pregnancy and cultural practices that groom young girls on how to please a man.

The panellists emphasized the crucial role that parents, family members, community leaders, and the government play in safeguarding the lives and dignity of women in society.

UN Resident Coordinator Hopolang Phororo, who also attended the event, stated that inclusive participation is vital, as each individual brings unique perspectives and strengths to foster equality and challenge harmful practices.

"Educators and parents, in particular, are instrumental in instilling values of respect and equality early on, guiding younger generations to understand their rights and responsibilities in preventing gender-based violence. Traditional authorities and faith leaders, as respected voices within their communities, can challenge entrenched gender norms and encourage the acceptance of equitable practices. Ending gender-based violence demands a collective effort rooted in respect, understanding, and shared responsibility while recognizing that the game changers are in the communities, as GBV is entrenched in the social fabric."

EU Ambassador to Namibia Ana Beatriz Martins pointed out that although the country has made significant strides in promoting women's empowerment, it often encounters harsh realities that remain shielded from the public eye.

"By fostering open communication between generations, we can challenge deeply entrenched cultural norms and taboos that perpetuate gender-based violence. This empowers survivors and allies to share their stories, challenge harmful behaviors, and create a culture of accountability and support that can disrupt the cycle of violence."

The event, held under the theme "UNITE! Invest to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls," is part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence activities, a global campaign running from November 25th to December 10th.
