Deputy Executive Director in the Ministry of Education, Edda Bohn, is reiterating that those who enrolled their children in unregistered schools should take them to formal government schools.
Even though there are challenges in terms of space, Bohn said the ministry can introduce the platoon system to make up for the lack of said space.
The Deputy Executive Director was responding to questions about the unregistered Ndama East primary school, where over 500 learners are being taught under trees without access to water, adequate teaching materials or toilet facilities.
Bohn said the ministry can accommodate the learners.
They will just have to be assessed, which will then determine in which grade they will be placed.
At the moment, learners at this school are often exposed to harsh weather conditions or certain dangers like snakes entering the makeshift structures. Because the school is unregistered, the Ministry of Education is not necessarily responsible for any dangers that might arise.
Bohn said this is the time for community members to work together in an effort to provide the learners with the education they deserve.
This comes after community members refused to move their children to a school constructed at Ndama South, less than a kilometre away from the unregistered school.
The parents are refusing to move their children from the unregistered school, saying the Ministry of Education had initially promised that a school was going to be built where the children are being taught now.
"Whether there have been disputes about the locations of schools or not, we have to work together for the betterment of the lives of our people, and that is the importance. Whatever has gone wrong in the Ndama cases, we are hard at work to mitigate and eliminate the misunderstandings, and it is our intention to work all together for the Namibian children and for all of us, for the entire nation, to improve the condition of education and service delivery."
Bohn said the ministry is currently working on ensuring that the Ndama East issue is resolved once and for all.
"We wish to have adequate structures ready within three months, so that at the start of the new calendar year, the new school year, sufficient classroom space can be offered. We are here to provide education for all. There is no one who should be left out. Even those that are currently being taught by volunteers under trees should not be left out."
