The City of Windhoek has launched the Backyard Gardening Project to promote household food security and sustainable urban agriculture. The main objective is to increase food security through awareness and sustainable backyard production in Windhoek.

The project aims to transform unused household spaces into productive gardens, empowering residents with practical skills, knowledge, and resources for sustainable food production.

It will provide training, create demonstration gardens, and raise community awareness of the nutritional, economic, and environmental benefits of backyard gardening.

Training will focus on technical skills such as organic fertiliser use and water-efficient irrigation.

Target groups include residents of informal settlements and low- to middle-income neighbourhoods, community-based organisations, schools, youth and women's groups, and educational and vocational institutions.
