The housing gap in Katima Mulilo is expected to narrow with the development of Extension 39 by a private developer.

Mishake & Sons Trading CC has partnered with WAT Construction to construct 83 houses at a cost of N$80 million.

Manager of Mishake & Sons Trading CC, Mishake Muhinda, said, "The start of community building endeavours – 83 houses – will become more than just brick and mortar; they will become the homes where families grow, where children play, where neighbours partner with one another and where the fabric of the community is strengthened."

Sewer and water are already connected to the site, while the construction of the bitumen standard roads will start soon.

Councillor for Kabbe South Raymond Sezuni, who represented the governor at the groundbreaking ceremony, said the construction of the houses stands as a beacon of hope to the residents.

"Creating homes where families can grow, children can dream and our people can live with dignity. The government continues to place housing at the centre of its social and economic agenda.  Adequate shelter remains a basic need and key pillar of our development goals."

The Administrator for Katima Town Council, Marina Kandumbu, stressed the need for access to affordable housing.

"Access to proper housing gives our people dignity, stability and pride; it strengthens the social fabric of our town and drives economic growth."

The project, she said, contributes to the NDP 6, which prioritises affordable housing and sustainable urban development for all.

The housing project is expected to be completed by December 2026.
