The City of Windhoek (CoW) has urged the residents to handle the fireworks responsibly in the celebration of the new year to avoid injuries and damage to properties.
Residents are urged to take precautions with fireworks and follow all the safety tips to ensure a secure celebration of the new year.
CoW Spokesperson Harold Akwenya said, "As the City of Windhoek, our responsibility is to ensure public safety, protect lives and properties and prevent fire incidents. That's why we continuously remind residents to follow the approved safety regulations. Fireworks may only be discharged in council-approved designated areas; it is illegal and dangerous to set off fireworks in residential streets, near buildings or any area that has not been approved by the city."
Akwenye added that anyone planning to display fireworks must apply for permission at least fourteen days in advance.
Furthermore, a valid licence is required for selling, dealing or handling fireworks.
"Fireworks can also be stressful to pets; we advise residents to keep pets indoors away from windows and ensure they are in a calm and secure environment. It is also important to plan for potty before fireworks begin, being considerate that health is protected and reducing distress in our communities."
Akwenye urges residents to contact the Windhoek Fire Brigade in case of a fire emergency at 061 211111.
The city encourages residents to celebrate responsibly and to always prioritise safety first to ensure that everyone has a safe festive season.
