Inspector-General of Police Joseph Shikongo has called on officers to serve the public with dedication and professionalism.
He made the remarks while addressing police members ahead of the latest national police operation, urging them to carry out their duties diligently and responsibly.
The police are focusing on preventing and combatting criminal activities.
Inspector General Joseph Shikongo stressed a need to educate communities on matters of stock theft, drug abuse, by-laws, and gender-based violence.
Lieutenant General Shikongo also encouraged police officers to assist the public at all times and not to deny anyone based on factors such as distance.
“Our operations should not be vehicle-centred. We must reach out to the communities. We must go where the people are. When cases are reported to us, we should go to the people, not expect community members to come to the police station. It is unreasonable to ask someone to walk two, three or even four kilometres to a station, especially at night. I have heard some officers saying that certain areas are too far to reach. Yet we expect community members to travel those same distances to report crimes. Why can’t we consider their safety? Let us go to the communities. Let us go to where crimes are being committed. Let us get out of our offices.”
He urged the public to cooperate with the police to defeat crime and social challenges.
Donors gifted the police with bicycles, body cameras, shoulder lights, vehicle trackers, and recorders.
The weekend police operation covered Rehoboth, Okahandja, and Windhoek.
